Lonely boy Clark and some icons again!
In the current Action Comics #855 (another issue with Richard Donner on the team!) we have a 2-page flashback to a moment in Clark's boyhood on the farm. Clark is watching other boys playing football from afar, using his "telescopic vision" to follow the game. Like many times before, it seems, Pa Kent tries to tell poor Clark why he can't play games with other children.

Art by Eric Powell, colors by Dave Stewart, story by Geoff Johns and Richard Donner.

Awww. He cheered up. And what a neat mention of Ben Hubbard! :)

The rest (in present time) is an amazing tale of Bizarro abducting Pa Kent and bringing him to his own cube-shaped Earth in the "vicinity of a blue sun". Superman follows him in a rocket ship but Jor-El warns him beforehand that under a young blue sun, his powers will be enhanced. Perhaps he'll even develop new ones. Wow! This is only part 1 of "Escape from Bizarro world" and I'll probably be reviewing it once it's finished. :)

It's nice to see Bizarro Superman in comics now that we're so close to Smallville's new season, waiting to see what'll happen to THAT version of Bizarro in the very first ep! Woot! Is it possible the timing is just a huge coincidence? I kind of doubt that.

I'm bringing more icons, this time 11 veeeery old-skool Superman, Clark and Lois! These come from Action Comics #1 and #7 that appeared in 1938. Can't get cooler than that.

01. 02. 03.

04. 05. 06.
07. 08. 09.
10. 11.

"It's not about football, Pa!" Oh, clark....*sniffles*

This is a nice look at Pa Kent, not too anal, with just a hint of sadness...

That one sentence is enough to break one's heart! Poor Clark, I really felt for him. In this flashback sadness and loneliness was written all over his face.

I agree on Pa Kent because he can be, dare I say it, a DRAMA QUEEN sometimes. *laugh* Well, not a drama queen but he does anger quickly and he's got quite a temper. Clark once said in one issue (I think it was in 'The Man of Steel' run) he wanted to talk things out with Ma more when visiting the farm because she was "different" than Pa. Clark thought Pa reminded him too much of Jor-El sometimes (as far as his strict and sometimes "cold" nature goes). Interesting!
Agent M[info]rebellious_love on September 18th, 2007 10:53 pm (UTC)
Clark's face is just so full of longing. No matter how super he is, sometimes everyone just wants to be like everyone else. And poor, Pete with the broken arm...

I think Pa Kent and Jor-el get too caught up in the mechanics of things, like people not finding out about Clark's powers, that they forget about the heart of things. They mean well, but it would be nice for them to ease up every once in a while.

*nod nod* It's like Pa decided he has to be the "strong one" and be overprotective of Clark, which allows Martha to be a tad more forgiving and lenient but I think she worries just as much about Clark's safety and would be very ticked off if he did something terribly wrong or stupid.

Pa's more "better be safe than sorry", being extra careful and everything. He was probably feeling on edge all the time when Clark was younger and still living at the farm. Probably more than Clark realizes. Pa tends to keep a lot of things inside to not burden Martha and Clark too much.

I guess his outbursts are the more aggressive when they do happen and he lets everything out at once!

Pa is more better safe than sorry. I can't complain too much; it was this upbringing that turned Clark into being such a compassionate, level headed person. Without that, I'm sure he'd use his powers much differently.

I definitely think that Ma worries alot more than she lets on. I always get the feeling from her that she doesn't want to get in the way of who Clark believes he needs to be.

Yep, a nice Jonathon and Clark moment in the latest Action Comics - am enjoying following the Donner story :) Great icons also!

Great icon you've got there yourself! :)

It's wonderful to see Donner on Action and I get so very, VERY excited about every new issue (it's crazy!), my only wish is a tighter schedule. All the looong delays haven't been fun, especially when they've got *Donner* and we're all waiting anxiously for his story like little kids around a camping fire! Whenever a new issue comes, I have to re-read all the previous issues to remember what exactly was going on before, haha.

But I think it'll be worth it in the end and I'm curious about the little boy Chris angle and this Bizarro story looks promising. :) Wish they kept Donner for a long time, I'm sure he has great stories to tell.

Thank you, glad you liked the icons!

Thank you very much, glad you liked the icons and scans! :) I'm a sucker for flashbacks to Smallville years! This one was particularly touching.

Your icon has one of my fave pics ever of young Clark drawn by Renato Guedes. I love that whole comic page, in fact! I was like "IT'S TOM WELLING!" when I first read the comic. Joy!
I went to check the iconmaker's lj for more. :)

Aww, poor little Clark :(

I liked the mention of Ben Hubbard to. I was hoping that he would show up in "Smallville" to comfort Martha after Jonathan died, and tell Lionel to get lost.
houseofel: SV Gorgeous Tom Welling[info]houseofel on September 21st, 2007 02:54 am (UTC)
Ben Hubbard on Smallville is a GREAT idea! I can't believe I haven't thought of that! It would make sense, it's canon both in comics and movies.

If Martha has a boyfriend or husband or just someone really close like a best friend after Jonathan, it should be Ben. I could never tell whether Lionel was being honest or not about anything (but that's the beauty of the character) and even though he did seem genuinely in love with Martha sometimes, I just don't think he's the right man for her. Just UGH. O_O

It would be cool to see him make some serious advances next season, only to be interrupted by the arrival of Ben! That would so rock. If they wanted they could make Ben a regular on the show, even. Maybe have him there as a new father figure for Clark now that Jonathan is gone and Martha's away.

I know. I remember one scene where it looked like they were about to kiss. I was screaming at the tv "NO! don't do it!" and thankfully they didn't. Mionel is, to quote Kevin Spaceys Lex "WRONG!".

It would be cool to see him make some serious advances next season, only to be interrupted by the arrival of Ben! That would so rock.

I would love that, but I'm not sure how much we're going to see of Martha next season. Not even sure if Annette is in the opening title sequence anymore :-/

I love these icons (decided to browse comic icons on this lovely Sunday morning). The nostalgia vibe of the icons is priceless, especially in these DC times. (</3 at all the losses the past few years).

Thank you muchly, glad you liked them! I love to browse for icons, too, it's so addicting. If I could have 200 icons in my lj account, I would! :) I just might buy some extra icon space. *laugh*

I love, love the art from early Action Comics and I'll be iconing more of it soon!

Thanks again for stopping by. :)

He looks like he wants to play so much. It's just GUH. He's pleading with Pa to let him play.

So, so sad!

yeah, i'm so glad i stumbled upon this. i've always been a bigger batman fan, what with the "my parents died, must rid the city of the evil that killed them" spiel, and never really, idk, looked past superman's "boy scout-ness." but now i see that clark had his fair share of troubles too!

ooh and i loveee the icons btw =]
